These metal d rings are 38mm non welded d rings formed from 4.2mm wire with a gunmetal finish, made for 38mm (about 1.5 inch) webbing and leather straps. The flat-bottom D shape lets the strap sit flush, and the dark plating suits modern bag designs. Typical uses include d rings for bags, backpacks and canvas totes. Nearly 20 years of manufacturing experience, free stock samples available, OEM customization supported.
What are metal d rings? They are D-shaped connector rings, usually bent from a single length of wire, that tie a strap or a piece of webbing to a bag body. DG-DR038 is a 38mm non welded D ring made from iron wire, with a 4.2mm wire diameter and a gunmetal electroplated finish. It is a d shaped metal ring sized for 38mm (about 1.5 inch) webbing and leather straps, and each piece weighs 11.5g.
Buyers search for the same part under several names: d ring, d rings, dee ring, or the sewing-trade term haberdashery d rings. All of them point to this kind of strap connector, so this page uses the names side by side.

One thing buyers often ask is why two rings that are both called 38mm can behave so differently on the same strap. The answer is almost always the inner opening. On this model the 38mm figure is measured between the inside edges of the ring, which is the number that matters when webbing has to pass through. The outer width is larger, roughly 46mm once the wire thickness is added on both sides.
The 4.2mm wire diameter is the second number to read. Thin wire bends under strap tension and the opening slowly widens. Wire that is too thick leaves less room for the webbing to fold, and it adds weight to the bag. At 4.2mm, the ring stays rigid on handbag-sized loads while keeping the finished piece at 11.5g.
The flat bottom edge also has a job. It lets the strap lie flat against the ring instead of twisting, which keeps stitched loops tidy and stops edges from rolling. When customers compare a d ring for purse straps against a round loop, the flat edge is usually what settles the choice.

A non welded ring is bent from wire, cut to length, and closed so the two ends meet at the bottom. You can see that line in the product photo. There is no weld bead, no heat discoloration and no grinding to blend a joint, which keeps unit cost down and makes the plating surface simpler.
In our workshop the seam is where we spend the most attention. Both wire ends are cut square and brought together so the gap stays tight. A wide gap can catch thread or fabric, and a burr at the cut face can fray webbing over time. That is why every batch is checked by running a fingertip and a piece of cloth over the joint before plating.
It is a D-shaped ring whose ends are pressed together rather than fused. It holds a sewn or threaded strap well, but it is designed for light to moderate loads. Where a bag carries real weight, many designers choose a welded version, and we can discuss that option during development.
| Point | Non Welded | Welded |
|---|---|---|
| Seam | Visible butt joint | Fused and ground smooth |
| Typical Use | Handbags, straps, sewing projects | Higher tension straps |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Plating Surface | Simple, one continuous wire | Joint area needs extra care |
| Installation | Thread through strap or sew in loop | Same, with stronger closure |
When people search for types of d rings, they are usually separating them by seam (welded or not), shape (flat bottom or rounded), and make (wire formed or cast). The different types of d rings also vary in finish and size. This product sits in the wire-formed, flat-bottom, non welded group.
A dee ring is the same part under the older British spelling, still common on sewing and leathercraft sites. Haberdashery d rings is the retail term used for small bag-making supplies, and those pages often feature this exact style.

This ring is made from iron wire. Iron takes polishing and plating well, bends cleanly on a forming machine, and keeps metal d rings affordable at volume. Brass and zinc alloy are the alternatives buyers raise most often, so the table below shows how they differ in practice.
| Feature | Iron Wire | Brass | Zinc Alloy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical Process | Wire Forming | Wire Forming or Casting | Die Casting |
| Strength at Same Size | High | Medium | Medium to Low |
| Weight at 38mm | About 11.5g | Heavier | Varies with design |
| Plating Adhesion | Good after polishing | Good | Good with proper pretreatment |
| Corrosion if Plating Breaks | Rusts | Tarnishes | White corrosion |
| Shape Options | Simple loops | Simple loops | Complex shapes |
| Unit Cost | Lowest | Highest | Medium |
| Best Fit | Cost-sensitive handbag lines | Gold-tone fashion lines | Decorative or branded rings |
For a plain strap connector, iron wire usually gives the best balance of strength and price. The trade-off is that iron depends on its plating layer, which is why we put so much effort into the finishing steps described next.
Instead of listing steps, here is what a customer would see on a cloud visit to our floor.

A small European handbag label came to us last year with a problem. Their sample bags were using d rings for handbags bought from a retail supplier, and the finish was wearing at the seam after only a few weeks of handling. They also found the inner opening varied by about a millimeter, which made strap stitching uneven.
During prototype development we measured their strap, fixed the inner width at 38mm, and polished the rings before plating to protect the joint area. We also asked them to check the first samples against their webbing, not just against a ruler. The revised batch fitted without rework, and they moved the part into their regular reorder list.
In everyday production, these rings go into several product types:

The dimension picture shows four numbers. Each one affects fit or cost, so here is why they matter.

Choose this ring if you run a fashion brand, an OEM bag factory, or a design studio that needs a clean, dark strap connector at a sensible cost. It also suits small-MOQ brands moving from retail sourcing to a factory source. Many buyers start by searching d ring hardware or d ring purse hardware, then narrow down by size and finish.
It is less suitable for rigging, load securing or any use where strap tension is high and failure would be a safety issue. In those cases, a welded ring with a thicker wire is the safer choice, and we can quote that instead. Honest fit matters more to us than closing one more order.
If you are looking for custom d rings, here is what we can change. We adjust the inner width, height and wire diameter, and we can switch the base material from iron to brass or zinc alloy where your design calls for it. Colors beyond gunmetal include nickel, gold tones and black, all produced through Electroplating.
Private Label work happens at the packaging stage. We can add barcode labels, hang tags and branded retail boxes, or pack to your own carton specifications. The Packaging standard is Pearl Foam + OPP Bag + Export Carton, and Customized Packaging is available on request. For new shapes we make a forming tool first, then sample, and the full process fits within our 5–7 day custom sampling window.

Iron relies on its plating, so storage matters. Humidity is the main risk, so keep cartons dry and away from outside walls. Sweat and acidic hand cream can wear plating on rings that stay in contact with skin, so leather-lined straps help. Wipe rings with a dry soft cloth rather than a wet one. During sea shipment, keep desiccant in the carton and avoid opening it in damp ports.
Production time is 10–15 days, and delivery time is also 10–15 days. Custom samples take 5–7 days, while free stock samples are usually ready in 1–3 days. If you are working to a launch date, tell us early so we can plan the plating slot.
The MOQ is 1000 pcs (negotiable based on order details). If you are a smaller brand testing a new bag, share your plan and we will see what can be arranged. Many of our long-term customers started with a first order below their final volume.
Free stock samples are available. Custom samples require a sampling fee, and custom sample fees are fully deductible from bulk orders. Courier charges are borne by the customer. A new forming tool is only needed when your size or shape does not match what we already run.
Yes. A sewable d ring is easy to adjust because the wire and forming tool are simple to change. Tell us the strap width and thickness, and we will propose an inner width and wire diameter. We usually send a sample for a strap fit test before you approve the order.
Gunmetal is the finish shown here. We can also plate nickel, gold tones and black. Because iron needs a solid plating layer, we tell you upfront if a requested color needs a different process or a longer lead time. Color cards or physical samples help avoid mismatch.
The ring itself is a simple wire part, so a logo is normally placed on the packaging, hang tag or retail box. If you need a logo directly on hardware, we recommend pairing this ring with a metal logo plate. We can supply both and match the finish.
Certificate requests come up in most sourcing reviews, and we handle them project by project. We maintain quality certification documentation and are happy to provide the current valid certificates upon request during your sourcing evaluation. Tell us your target market and your buyer’s requirements, and we will check what documentation we can send alongside your quotation.

We have nearly 20 years of manufacturing experience, and the same team handles quoting, sampling and shipping on your account. Fast sampling helps you test the ring on a real strap within days. Engineering support covers fit checks, wire choice and plating advice. Our QC Inspection catches gaps and color differences before cartons are sealed. Responsive communication means you get a clear answer, not a template. Most of our customers stay for repeat orders because the second batch matches the first.

If you already have a drawing or a strap sample, send it over and we will check the inner width and wire diameter against it. If you are still comparing suppliers, ask for free stock samples of DG-DR038 and test them on your own webbing. We are happy to review your metal d rings requirements, quote custom sizes, and tell you plainly if another ring would fit better.
